Join us as Bob Gander teaches how to carve a Realistic Human Head in Profile in basswood. We will block out, shape and detail the face. That is, this is not a relief carving. Aspects of human anatomy and facial structure will also be discussed.

Bob Gander has been a carver since the 1980s. He has carved in a variety of styles: in-the-round, relief, caricature, stylized, realistic (and nearly realistic) and even a little chip carving. His preferred subjects are mammals (including humans) and geometric forms. He has competed successfully in local, national and international wood carving competitions.


Target Audience: experienced beginner to intermediate level carver.


Note: The minimum # of participants required to run the course is 4 and maximum 8.




Tools required:

  • Carving Tools:

    · 1.5 mm (1/16”) gouge

    · 1.5 mm V-tool (parting tool)

    · 3 or 4.5 mm (1/8” or 3/16”) gouge or veiner [The club’s Flexcut set has this.]

    · 6 or 7.5 mm (1/4” or 5/16”) #9 or #11 gouge [The club’s Flexcut set has a #6, which is acceptable.]

    · 6 mm, 45° or 60° V-tool [The club’s 70° V-tool is acceptable.]

    · 7.5 or 10 mm (5/16” to 3/8”) #11 gouge

    · A short-bladed detail knife. [A 4.5 mm (3/16”) skew would also be handy.]

    · A rough-out knife

    Other Tools:

    · A sturdy cut resistant glove for your non dominant hand is essential for the course.

    ·Toothbrush for cleaning chips. SCRAPING and PRYING are NOT allowed.

    · Vernier calipers: preferably metal, capable of inside and outside measurement, metric scale. NOT


Please bring your food and drink to class so we can use our time as best we can.

You will be required to sign a waiver which will supplied at the class.


Fee: OWC member $ 80

        Non-member $ 100 (includes a reduced $20 annual membership fee)
