Introduction to Wood Carving

Presented by Outaouais Wood Carvers

Sponsored by Flexcut

Saturday, April 20, 2024 9:30AM to 2:30 PM

Nepean Creative Arts Center, 35 Stafford Road, Ottawa- Unit 7

This one-day course is designed to teach participants the fundamentals of Wood Carving. OWC member Bob Gander will guide participants through a series of topics necessary to start your wood carving journey.

Topics will include; styles of carving, wood selection, types of tools, safety, selecting minimum tools needed to get started and basic maintenance. He will also discuss finishing techniques, resources and much more.

While this is not a project class, you will put the day’s learnings into practice by carving 1 or 2 simple pieces (as shown), incorporating your new skills.

A range of tools supplied by our Flexcut Carving Tools sponsor will be available for participants use on the day of the course. Participants are encouraged to bring along their own carving tools, if applicable. A sturdy glove, preferably cut resistant, for your non-dominant hand is essential for course participation. These can be obtained at a hardware or wood working store.

Bob has been carving since the 1980s. He has carved in a variety of styles: in-the-round, relief, caricature, stylized, realistic (and nearly realistic) and even a little chip carving. His carving courses include a variety of introductory projects, sharpening carving tools, love spoons, horses, stylized animals, caricatures and realistic human heads.
