Catherine joined the club in 2013, and while she also enjoys wood carving, pyrography is her passion. She is adept in the shading techniques and will walk you thru the process of burning and shading a rose.     Presented by Outaouais Wood Carvers Saturday, April 18th, 2026 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM Nepean Creative Arts Center, 35 Stafford Road, Ottawa- Unit 7 John Bowser  is an OWC member who has been teaching the how’s and why’s of carving for more than two decades. John will teach you the techniques to carve a simple spoon. He will have various samples of decorative spoons to whet your appetite to carve even fancier spoons. Target Audience: Beginner to more Advanced Carvers 2 basswood blanks will be included. A short demonstration on Kolrossing will be included as a small bonus. Tools: Suggested tools for this project are knives, palm or full size gouges- sizes three to seven. Hook tool or spoon gouge (some will be available to use) A clamp or bench hook may be an asset however, not required.   • March 28th and April 25th, 2026 Relief Carving of a Sailing Ship

    CLASS NOW FULL Presented by Outaouais Wood Carvers March 28th from 9:30-4:00 and April 25th, from 1:30-5:00 Nepean Creative Arts Center, 35 Stafford Road, Ottawa in the Practice Room, Join Brian as he teaches the technique of relief carving a sailing ship. A few words from Brian about his experience in carving and pyrography: I have been carving for 34 years, starting in 1992, and I have very much enjoyed the challenge and the comradery that this art form has given me. I initially started carving in the round, mainly wildlife, and then settled on relief carving. I have been teaching Relief Carving to club members and the general public for the last 20 years. I took up pyrography in 2001 and enjoyed it so much that I started teaching pyro to club members and others and continued for many years. I also was the coordinator of a pyro group, the Pyromaniacs, that met every Sunday for 20 years. All in all, I have completed approximately 230 pyros and 70 carvings. This relief carving project will teach you these fundamentals of relief carving: 1) How to set out the depths and how many levels you will need. 2) How to carve down to the depths you require. 3) How to undercut layers to give even more 3D effect. 4) How to carve out small holes in the sails. 5) How to outline the carving with an oval ring to give the carving definition. 6) How to stamp or stain the background so that the carving stands out. Target Audience: Experienced beginner to Intermediate level carver. Tools needed: Bench Hook – Please indicate if you have your own or need to borrow one from the club. In the Practice Room Join us as Jeff Hewitt shows us how to carve a 1/2 decoy of a Lesser Scaup. A little bit from Jeff about his carving experience: My family and I moved to Ottawa from North Bay in June 2024. While in North Bay, I belonged to the North Bay Carving Club for about a decade before it dissolved in 2020 because of Covid and the lack of a facility to carve in. During that time, I carved mostly ducks and songbirds. I am primarily a power carver. Since joining the Outaouais Carving club in the fall of 2024, I have started to expand my carving horizons by taking advantage of the excellent courses offered by the club members. Target Audience : experienced beginner to intermediate level carver. Note : The minimum # of participants required to run the course is 4 and maximum 6.     Presented by Outaouais Wood Carvers Sponsored by Flex-cut 2-day course.  Saturday February 7th and 14th, 9:30-3:30 Nepean Creative Arts Center, 35 Stafford Road, Studio M, Ottawa Join us as Bob Gander teaches how to carve a Realistic Human Head in Profile in basswood. We will block out, shape and detail the face. That is, this is not a relief carving. Aspects of human anatomy and facial structure will also be discussed. Bob Gander has been a carver since the 1980s. He has carved in a variety of styles: in-the-round, relief, caricature, stylized, realistic (and nearly realistic) and even a little chip carving. His preferred subjects are mammals (including humans) and geometric forms. He has competed successfully in local, national and international wood carving competitions. Target Audience : experienced beginner to intermediate level carver. Note : The minimum # of participants required to run the course is 4 and maximum 8. From Darryl: As an artist, I find my deepest connection with natural products—specifically in wood. Working primarily with cottonwood and basswood, I breathe life into whimsical faerie houses and other structures. My sculptures feature towering roofs, a profusion of windows, and intricate staircases and balconies. The inspiration for my art flows directly from the unique shapes of the natural materials I choose to work with. The round up will consist of 3 to 4 consecutive sessions all focused on a Christmas theme, mainly ornaments. It will be held in the large room (6) where we usually meet for the Friday Clutch There will be 3 to 4 sessions in the morning, and 3 in the afternoon with a 4th table set up for painting. Each session will cost $10. You may take a morning and afternoon project on each day or take only one class. Space for each session is limited, and will be first come, first served.     Introduction to Pyrography- Tentatively full pending availability of Wood Burners Presented by Outaouais Wood Carvers Saturday, October 4th, 2025 12:00-5:00 PM Nepean Creative Arts Center, 35 Stafford Road, Unit 7, Ottawa This one-day course is designed to teach participants the basics of pyrography (Wood Burning).  OWC member Pam Laprise has been doing pyrography since 2013. She will explain and demonstrate:  Supplies  Pyrography machines/pens/tips   Safety- What to burn, what NOT to burn  Wood prep, patterns and design transfer  What can I do with one pen? Texturing  Tips and troubleshooting  Adding colour and finishing You will work on a project utilizing some of the techniques learned. We will concentrate on discovering what you can do with just 3 pen tips- a writing tip, a shader tip and a skew. Wood and pattern will be provided for this project.     Presented by Outaouais Wood Carvers Sponsored by Flex-cut 1 day course Saturday Nov. 1st, 2025 10:00 AM to 3.00 PM Nepean Creative Arts Center, 35 Stafford Road, Unit 7, Ottawa OWC member Bob Gander will guide participants through carving a small gnome. A range of tools supplied by our Flexcut Carving Tools sponsor will be available for participants use on the day of the course. Participants are encouraged to bring along their own carving tools, if applicable. A sturdy, preferably cut resistant glove, for your non-dominant hand is essential for course participation . These can be bought at a hardware or wood working store. Fee: OWC member $ 40 Non-member $ 70 (includes a reduced $30 annual membership fee) Cancellation refunds given only with 4 days’ notice of the course, by Oct. 28th, 2025 Registration and payment are required in advance. First come, first served 😉 Registration deadline is, Oct. 27, 2025 Maximum 8 participants. Note: a minimum of 4 participants are required to run this workshop. Participants aged 14-17 inclusive must be accompanied by parent for the duration of the class.
